My Melanin Skin
When I tell you I have been fascinated by the beauty industry in some form or fashion for awhile…I truly mean it.
From a toddler, I was obsessed! Taping paper "nails" on my fingers and mixing up concoctions from the kitchen were my typical evening activities....after homework of course! I can remember every time I went to the hair salon, I would stare in awe as my stylist worked her magic on my mom and her other clients. At nail appointments, I would watch the nail tech lay the acrylic meticulously -- shaping each nail precisely.
My first official job during college was as a sales associate for a major retailer of cosmetics, perfumes and personal care products. There, I became familiar with how unique and different skin really is. At this job, I introduced clients to newly launched cosmetics, offered advice based on a customer’s skin type and often performed mini makeovers. I graduated from North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Fast forward four months after graduating and I am developing the products for companies I often demonstrated for. Being new in the industry, I made sure to soak up as much as I could from whomever I came across. When the natural hair market began to peak, I was thrilled to see the jump in hair care products available and being developed for ethnic hair.
As I transitioned into the skin care market, I began to notice the lack of products and information dedicated to ethnic skin. Being an ethnic woman, when I'm on the hunt for a new product to purchase or service, I want to see myself in that brand.
I'm the type of person that constantly wants to know more. I'm always searching for the solution and answer to..."why?". My curiosity lead me to enrolling in esthetician school. yaay! During the initial phase in my career, I would often get questions about what products to use, suggestions on how to do this, etc. Often times, I honestly had no clue and started researching different things. However, I'm keen on perfection (slight OCD), and I want to know the correct way of doing things. Not what only what I get from YouTube or Pinterest per se. Hence, my decision to go back to school! Now that I'm officially a licensed esthetician, it's time to roll up my sleeves and get to work!
Melanin. Melanin skin in particular is my focus for this blog. The specific reasons in why is another topic. There has been some debate on if there is actually a difference in ethnic skin.
Stay tuned for more!
