Glycolic Acid: The Tiny Powerhouse
Ingredients play an important role in choosing the right products to maintain healthy skin. Depending on your skin type and current skin concerns and/or conditions, a single ingredient can alleviate or even cause more damage.
Glycolic acid belongs to a group of alpha hydroxy acids. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are chemical exfoliants that occur naturally and can also be synthetically derived. Other AHAs include lactic, citric, malic, tartaric acid(s).
It is the strongest, yet smallest in molecular weight of the other AHAs. This tiny powerhouse is naturally derived from sugar cane. It's exfoliation is caused by the acid penetrating into the top layer of skin and loosen the cells. This top layer of dead skin can appear dull, dry, flaky and even discolored.
Glycolic acid is often incorporated in chemical peels performed by a licensed esthetician or dermatologist. For at-home use, you can find glycolic acid in serums, moisturizers, and even cleansers.
Regular exfoliation is key to glowing skin!
